Taken For a Ride

Streetcars used to move America.

Now that the auto industry is choking on their own crap, they want everybody to give them a hand. But what exactly did these guys ever do for the public good? Taken for a Ride is an amazing documentary by Jim Kleina and Martha Olson that documents corporate efforts to uproot and derail mass public transport in America. Freeways pushed into the inner cities of America, and public transportation was pushed out.

With Rick Wagoner gone… Steve Wozniak should have a go at it.

I haven’t watched this documentary, yet, but the story of how the streetcar system was dismantled in L.A. by the automotive industry (part of the “Great American streetcar scandal”) was well known in that city. A lot of old-timers would lament th loss of the old “yellow-car” and “red-car” system.

We still have a streetcar system in Toronto. Combined with a subway and bus system it makes the public transport system here relatively good as these things go–far better than L.A., to be sure!
